Ross-on-Wye Choral Society was founded in 1967 and in the first few years its members sang under the direction of Ronald Smith. John Handley took over as Musical Director when, early in the life of the Society, Ronald moved away from Ross-on-Wye; John remained “at the helm” for thirty years until April 2000. Both Ronald and John have retained their links with the Society by accepting appointments as Vice Presidents. The Society is also honoured to have as its Patron the internationally famous soprano, Dame Felicity Lott, who takes an active interest in its affairs and appears on occasion on the concert platform with the choir, the most recent occasion being the Millennium Concert performance in June 2000 of the Bach B minor Mass. During its history, the Society has presented most of the major choral works as well as modern and lesser-known choral music, sometimes by local composers. The Society currently has around 60 members and performs 3 concerts each season in St. Mary’s Parish Church, beginning with a Christmas Celebration in December. Two further concerts take place in late January and May, with either organ or orchestral accompaniment. The Society frequently works with local singers and instrumentalists. Our regular orchestral partner is The Regency Sinfonia (formerly the Gloucestershire Concert Orchestra), which is based in Cheltenham and is composed of freelance musicians many of whom also have positions with such orchestras as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. In recent years, the Society has enjoyed an increased involvement with young vocalists and has engaged the services of student soloists from Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music for some of its concert performances. The Society has also invited local primary school choirs to take part in its popular annual Christmas concerts. |
